Today (March 26, 2013) is the 40th Anniversary of "The Young & The Restless". For this special day, CBS included it during their game shows, and Entertainment Weekly posted a clear copy of its first episode from 1973. On Monday, "The Talk" also aired an interview with some cast members.
The YR cast on "The Talk" included in the first segment sitting from left to right Peter Bergman (Jack), Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki), Kristoff St. John (Neal) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis). Aisha and Sheryl interviewed this group. After the commercial break, the first four that came out sat in the back and the others came out (sitting left to right) Josh Morrow (Nick), Amelia Henlie (Victoria), Michael Muhney (Adam) and Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea). Each person except for Melissa got to answer about one question. There was a cake at the end of the show.
On Let's Make a Deal, Y&R was part of a game. A woman was offered a certain amount of money for every year that the show was on the air. At first, this person didn't go for it, but eventually they did, and they ended up with $2,800 or $70 for each year the show was on the air. (The only reason I saw this was I was recording The Price is Right to see Y&R stars.)
On The Price is Right, four of the actors (Lamon Archey - Mason, Marco Dapper - Carmine, Ignacio Serricchio - Alex and Redaric Williams - Tyler) and Jeanne Cooper (Kay) appeared in a pricing game. There as a sofa along with a 3D television, which showed the YR40 promo. Then the guys acted like models for the rest of the show. Since Y&R films in the same building as TPIR and has for decades, this was a decent tie-in. One of the showcases also included a bonus visit to the Y&R studio.
The Y&R episode starts with Brad, who has no memory as a passenger with a trucker. On the premiere episode, the Y&R theme starts playing about 3 minutes in before the credits start. What I find interesting is that the logo is just the title in blue. There is also a lot of music like "The Look of Love" on the piano, which is actually a reference to Days of Our Lives, where Bill Bell was still writing, as that was Doug and Julie's song. Also Pierre sang another song at the restaurant. The credited cast was Brad (Tom Hallick), Sally (Lee Crawford), Snapper (William Gray Espy), Chris (Trish Stewart), Leslie (Janice Lynde), Pierre (Robert Clary), Stuart Brooks (Robert Colbert), Truck Driver (Clint Young) and Barbara (Deidre Hall). I don't want to give away what happens, which is why I'm not including a summary, but the first episode ending in a cliffhanger gave people a reason to tune in tomorrow.
I appreciated the network synergy and that Y&R's birthday wasn't forgotten. It is just unfortunate that these shows could not devote more time to the anniversary.
