Thoughts on Dallas on TNT Season One

On Wednesday, August 8, 2012, TNT aired the last episode of its first season or in some circles season 15. The show is returning in January. This references the entire season, so if you haven't watched and don't want to know please skip.

The best part about the new series is that they don't shy away from family. When John Ross (Josh Henderson) was in trouble everyone rallied for him even if it meant sacrifice. They were angry with his actions, but it was all about the Ewings as a whole. We also had Ann (Brenda Strong) standing up for Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) who in actually was never her sister-in-law, but due to their shared ties, Ann went after her former husband who was blackmailing the would be governor. Of course, saving the best for last, the scenes between Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and J.R. (Larry Hagman) didn't miss a beat, and there is no doubt that even with the fights they love one another. J.R. couldn't bear the idea of losing his brother and plead with him to get well.

The big twist at the end of the season was that Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) while a Rebecca wasn't Rebecca Sutter, but Pamela Rebecca, Cliff's (Ken Kercheval) daughter. There were clues within the episodes like her love of Chinese food just like her father. Also Cliff was missing from Rebecca and Christopher's (Jesse Metcalfe) wedding. It was puzzling that Cliff wouldn't go to his nephew's ceremony, but this twist explains his departure. Rebecca is pregnant with twins, and a DNA test was run proving the paternity. Thankfully as far as we know unless minds were changed Christopher and Rebecca share no blood ties though legally they are cousins. Rebecca, who was initially written as a good girl, fought with her accomplice Tommy (Callard Harris) and accidentally killed him. Her secrets would stay secret except the real Rebecca called Tommy and Christopher answered the telephone.

To be truthful, while the fighting over company issues and Southfork provided story fodder, I wasn't all that interested in those squabbles. They were just a means to an end. I want to see everyone interact and argue, but is alternative energy dangerous, is oil better or worse just wasn't that interesting. They could have been fighting over what's better french fries or pizza and I would have been as entertained.

The other person that was fought over was Elena (Jordana Brewster). John Ross got involved with her after Christopher broke up with her. Christopher thought that she ended everything via email. Elena ended her engagement with John Ross, by having her mother return her ring. She then proceeded to sleep with Christopher who cannot forgive Rebecca's duplicity.

While this summer season ended without a true cliffhanger, I appreciated that not everything was tied up in a bow. I enjoyed Dallas on TNT more than I expected and look forward to seeing more episodes in January 2013.
