General Hospital got on "The List: Top 20 TV medical shows" on The Washington Times website. To see who else was listed click here. To see my thoughts on it being part of the list continue reading.
The photo on the article is of Luke and Laura (Tony Geary and Genie Francis) from the characters' wedding in 1981. GH was number eight on the list. I find this amusing as the only things mentioned were that wedding, the Newsweek cover, Elizabeth Taylor's cameo, Demi Moore and how it is the oldest soap opera still in production. There is actually no mention of any medical stories like Robin (Kimberly McCullough) and Stone (Michael Sutton) having HIV or Monica (Leslie Charleson) having cancer, or any plot involving characters facing drug addiction or mental illness.
That said, these days when characters tend to get to General Hospital it tends to be due to mob violence. The only exceptions are if there is a mystery illness, a complication from Jason's (Steve Burton) car crash or a pregnancy. Kate's (Kelly Sullivan) mental illness (DID) even seems to be based on her fear of Sonny's (Maurice Benard) career. So while I think it is cool that GH got a mainstream mention, I think it is the least medical show in the top 10.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
